Among the most commonly used phytotherapeutics is an extract of the berry of the saw palmetto plant, a dwarf palm tree native to the southeastern U.S. Saw palmetto extracts are generally used to relieve symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), one of the most common medical conditions in aging men, is caused by the non-malignant growth of the prostate gland. More than 50% of men over 50 years of age have been found at autopsy to display histological signs of BPH, and by the seventh and eighth decades, this rate increases to over 90%. Over 40% of men aged 70 and older complain of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), which manifest as urgency, increased frequency, hesitancy, dribbling, weak stream, nocturia, dysuria, and incomplete emptying of the bladder
