Osthole is an active compound isolated from Cnidium monnieri (L.) Cusson and Angelica pubescens. The fruit of Cnidium monnieri (L.) Cusson is a well known traditional Chinese medicine, and has been used to treat itchy skin, rashes, eczema, and ring-worm. Osthole is a derivative of coumarin, which is known to have a variety of pharmacological and biological uses; both are considered to have therapeutic applications. Because of osthole’s diverse pharmacological activities, it has been proposed the possibility of its development as a promising lead compound for drug discovery. Recent scientific research indicates that osthole has many biological functions, including anti-osteoporotic, anti-hepatitic, anti-allergic, anti-seizure, and anti-proliferative functions. Other research points to improvements in lipid metabolism and fatty liver.
