Erythritol has GRAS(Generally Recognized as Safe) status since 1996. In 2001, FDA reviewed a GRAS Notification and did not raise any safety or legal issues. The WHO/FAO Joint Export Committee on Food Additives(JECFA) reviewed the safety of erythitol in 1999 and established an ADI of not specified, the highest safety category possible.
Erythritol has been used in Japan since 1990 in candies, chocolates, soft drinks, chewing gums, yogurts, fillings, cookie coatings, jellies, jams and sugar substitutes.
Erythritol tastes 70 percent as sweet as sugar, so people can reduce their sugar intake without sacrificing taste. The ingredient also is non-glycemic and non-insulemic, making it a useful sugar alternative for people on diabetic diets. In addition, erthritol is noncariogenic (does not promote tooth decay) and is endorsed by Toothfriendly International.
