Kanhai Art is a nomenclature of lustrous, iconic, three dimensional gem-studded gold paintings done by internationally famous heritage artists - Padmashri Kanhai Chitrakar, Krishna Kanhai Chitrakar and Govind Kanhai Chitrakar- at their studio in Vrindavan, India. Kanhai with the help of his two creative sons Krishna and Govind brought about the renaissance of golden art which was virtually on the verge of extinction. While reviving this genre Chitrakars evolved their own distinctive style which came to be known as Kanhai Art. Assimilating various artistic influences Chitrakars introduced number of innovations in the heritage art without disturbing its essential character. These innovations marked the style of Kanhai Chitrakar. They improved upon the composition of embossing material and design, started using oil colours, enlarged the dimensions of the canvas, started drawing figures in realistic manner, improved the design of gem-setting work and introduced the use of twenty four carat gold foil. By introducing all these innovations they created a distinctive style of making gold paintings which became internationally famous as Kanhai Art. His art has gained so much importance and popularity in the field of heritage paintings that it attracted a Research Scholar of Agra Unversity (Ambedkar University) to do her Ph.D. on Kanhai’s Golden Art.
